Angiedw is in a Motel in Missouri

February 12, 2008 / by angiedw

Well, I thought that I would check in with you. The ice storm began at about 10:30 am with a vengence. I didn't get to my nail appointment since the roads became too dangerous. Our electricity went off at about 8pm and remained off until 3:00am but went off again at about 8:30 am. Since I have an all electric home, we are without heat, water, stove--everything! Towns throughout So. Illinois are without power and have been informed that power could remain off for three or four days. Although electric cooperatives from several states have come to lend aid, the damage is so widespread that a speedy recovery is not in the cards.

Today the ice storm has turned into sleet! Trees are down everywhere. They have been no match for the weight of the ice and sleet. Many homes have been damaged from trees falling onto them. We personally have not had that problem, but my beautiful Magnola tree has lost many huge branches and much of the top of the tree is gone. I'm afraid that it will die, but there is nothing that I can do right now. More bad weather is scheduled to move in this Friday.

I am so happy that I was able to post the birthdays and anniversary. Something told me that I might not have an opportunity later. You all take care--I see that So. Il isn't the only place reeling with Mother Nature's wrath.

I am warm now. I have to go back tomorrow to check on my kitties. I brought the dog with me, but I couldn't bring them. I have cried and really stressed out about leaving them, but Larry assures me that they will survive the cold. Temps are supposed to be down in the teens tonight.

I feel better after having you say that the kitties will be ok--if I go back tomorrow and something has happened to them--I don't know what I will do. This weather is crazy all over. I was watching the weather channel and saw all the severe weather conditions either happening or going to happen. I worried about all of you. As long as I am in a motel, I have my computer!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm glad you're safe in a hotel (with internet-what a bonus). The weather is trecherous though

It has really been the pits. We are three hours from home, and on the drive here we passes at least 8 wrecks. People were driving entirely too fast for the conditions. The weather has not been as bad here--very little ice. I hope that in the morning when I get up, the ice and sleet have not followed me here.

    Take care Ange.

Thank you. I will. Larry takes good care of me, and my son is next door. I would really be a happy camper though if I found out that my electricity is on and I could go home.

Oh gosh... how horrible! I hope you stay safe and that your lovely magnolia tree doesn't endure too much more damage (and doesn't end up dying!) before the storm is over.

It looks pretty bad on the homefront. We are going back tomorrow, but we plan to stay some place in Ky tomorrow night. We heard tonight that it may be the weekend before power is restored.

Glad you are safe in your motel refuge! Not to worry, the kitties will be fine with food, water, litter and plenty of warm snuggle places. May the ice melt and all the needed repairs proceed apace so that you can return to your home sweet home! Here in northwest Ohio, we are weathering a huge snowstorm, but very little ice or freezing rain. Stay warm and safe, my friend.... (((HUGS)))

Thank you so much. Your encouragment about my poor little kitties alleviates some of the stress that I am feeling. I will be so happy to have my home back and functional!!!!!!!!!!!

Take care~ My son is in Indiana, says it is icy there too. I'm looking at the weather radar... hopefully this will pass on thru.  Stay SAFE!!!!  Cindy

This winter has been one of extremes--unseasonably warm, cold, rain, snow, ice and sleet. I'm not anxious to see what tomorrow holds. I hope that your son is nice and warm and that you do not have anything but the raindrops falling on your roof.

Kitties are quite the survivors, they will know how to "make" a warm spot and stay warm.  They should be fine.  You, too, made the right choice to seek shelter....and warmth...and utilities....somewhere else.  Enjoy those comforts and be safe.

  • angiedw said 9 months ago

Thank you my friend. I will check on them tomorrow and Larry will care for the horses. Then we will try to find shelter in Kentucky farther east from Paducah. It may be the weekend before power is restored. One can't even buy gas in So. Illinois.

We went through what that ice can do earlier this year.  Stay safe and find warm shelter somewhere.

  • angiedw said 9 months ago

We may visit several states before this is over!

  • dragonflyby said 9 months ago

Sounds like the kind of weather I like to avoid.  Hope it warms up soon.

  • angiedw said 9 months ago

I wouldn't mind the cold if we had our power back.

  • bigrichard said 9 months ago

Ok angie heres what you do for next year,  go to your city council meeting and suggest that your city becomes and ice-free zone.  Y'all will need to vote on it, but I'm sure it will past.  Now for the horse water, I'm assuming you have a large tub, what we did was take about 3 -4 medium siuze bouies painted black, anchored them in the middle.  The sun would then heat those bouies enough to keep the ice thin.  Good luck and be safe.

  • angiedw said 9 months ago

I will suggest that be on the next agenda! The water for the horses is inside their stalls and is not warmed by the sun. The temps were in the teens again last night, but I hope that the water mains fluid, not a huge cube.

Oh Angie.  I am so sorry about you having to leave your babies behind.  That is so hard.  Just know that they will be fine.  They have a great fur coat.  Hang in there and dream of Hawaii.

  • angiedw said 9 months ago

Thank you my friend! The poor little critters have been so traumatized by their adventure!  I feel so helpless--Mother Nature needs to get some rest.

  • frogfenatic said 9 months ago

I hope you get your much needed rest soon.  It is so scary for little critters and people alike.  Do be careful and take care.
